On 11 June 2026, WHO/Europe will launch the new WHO Heat–Health Action Plans Guidance, an international point of reference for systematic, evidence-based health action in preparation for and response to extreme heat. The launch of the new Guidance will take place in Berlin, at a joint hybrid press conference hosted by the Federal Minister for the Environment, Climate Action, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety, together with the WHO Regional Director for Europe, the Senator for Science, Health and Care of the State of Berlin, and a senior representative from the European Commission Directorate-General for Climate Action.

Extreme heat is an urgent and growing public health threat, driven by climate change and exacerbated by urbanization and population ageing. It can increase morbidity and mortality rapidly, and places pressure on essential services, such as health and social care. The WHO European Region is the fastest warming global region with deep impacts on health and well-being, underlining the need for action and the relevance of the Guidance.

This second edition of the Guidance, coordinated by the WHO European Centre for Environment, Climate Change and Health in Bonn, Germany, is far more comprehensive than the first edition published in 2008. It presents an updated Heat–Health Action Plan framework across 8 core elements, highlighting key actions and decision points for planning, coordination, delivery and improvement.

Both virtual and in-person participation is possible for journalists. Non-press participants will be able to follow the live stream of the press conference. The press conference will have simultaneous translation into English and German.

Members of the press can register here: presse@bmukn.bund.de

On 1 June 2026, the start time of this event was updated from 08:20 to 08:00 Central European Summer Time.
